July 19

Magnificent weather. A charming and myopic journalist. Mail. Lunch with the Delamains, in a sort of train-station buffet—neon lit, of course. Meal. Dark ruminations. As the afternoon comes to a close, I visit a drama school. Interview with students and teachers. Dinner at the Chapasses’ with the national poet, Manuel Bandeíra, a small, extremely sharp man. Kaïmi, a Black man who composes and writes all the sambas sung in the country, sings and plays guitar after dinner.31 They are the saddest, most moving songs. The sea and love, longing for Bahia. Little by little, everyone begins to sing, among them a Black man, a deputy, a college professor, a notary public, all naturally and gracefully singing along with these sambas. Totally seduced.
